Highlands Historical Society wants your extra dahlias

It’s official, it’s Dahlia Week in Highlands

Highlands Mayor Pat Taylor recently signed a decree making it Dahlia Week in Highlands in honor of the annual Dazzling Dahlia Festival happening this weekend.

To make the weekend as spectacular as possible, the Highlands Historical Society wants all your flowers that you are not going to enter into the dahlia single bloom to be shared with the historical society/dahlia depot on Friday morning.

Saturday, they plan to drape Highlands in dahlias and other flowers from the Bascom to the historical village, so they need all the flowers they can get.

Share your flowers tomorrow and come be amazed with how they were used on Saturday.

The “Seasons of Highlands” will be presented through florals in ways you did not expect. It will be raining dahlias, there will be edible dahlias, bears and dahlias, waterfall dahlias, you get the picture!

The 13th annual Dazzling Dahlia Festival kicks off tonight at 5 p.m. at the Bascom with a dazzling dahlia party, which is free to the public.

Megan Gaillour is this year’s poster artist will be presented her $500 award, and there will be a few limited edition posters available for sale.

Lite bites, wine and beer will be complimentary, and the raffle drawing for the Bascom bridge project will be held.

Kirk Moore has created 4 dahlia signature cocktails and a zinnia mocktail that will be for sale for a small donation, and next year’s dahlia festival theme will be announced.

Friday please share your flowers, there are 52 vignettes to make and then we make & sell 100 mason jar arrangements.    We want dahlias and daisies and greenery and wildflowers, all the florals we can use.

Saturday from 10-5 Highlands will be a floral wonderland that people can use a map to navigate.  Maps will be available at the chamber, KHFP Park, the village and some businesses.

The historical village will be a beehive of activity with storytelling, Cynthia Strain and her book Highlands thru the Years, Angie Jenkins and her Highlands books, food; the Charles Nation Band from 12-2, Dr. Gary Wein from 2-3, and Nitrograss from 3-5.

The Bascom will host the single bloom on Saturday with entries accepted from 8-10, and the show complimentary & open to the public from 1-5.

The festival will come to an exciting finish when the festival winners are announced in KHFP during the concert Saturday at 6p.m., when Steel Toe Stiletto, a high energy dance band will take the stage, thanks to the Dahliabolicals.

Festival winners will be announced at the band intermission, when 1 fabulous vignette designer will take home $500.
