The Literacy & Learning Center gave pre-k aged kids a chance to flex their creative muscles decorating holiday cookies on Dec. 15.
Kids were given plain gingerbread cookies to work with and were cut loose armed with gum drops, frosting, sprinkles, and a slew of other colorful design materials to create their masterpieces.

TL&LC Marketing Manager Anna Norton said decorating cookies is part of a larger plan to provide interactive learning activities aimed at pre-k aged children while the TL&LC goes through the licensing and construction process leading to their new pre-K program.
“During the licensing process, we learned that some updates have to be made to the building, including a new door for a fire exit and updated wiring for the fire alarm system before the program can begin,” said Norton. “We will update the community as soon as we have more information about a start date.”

Kids were armed with gum drops, frosting, sprinkles and other decorating materials.
Other holiday activities at the TL&LC include a visit from TL&LC’s community partner, The Bascom, to create gingerbread houses with the After-school Enrichment students. Students were given their own miniature Christmas trees and a small collection of books to take home at the end of that day.
Recently TL&LC students also painted reindeer and made Christmas trees from sugar cones (upside down), icing, and candy.

Every now and then some of the materials meant for decoration were consumed by the artist.
Twelve after-school students also made art that was used to make 2024 TL&LC calendars as gifts for volunteers, and students helped decorate the learning center.
