12 Highlands Hurricanes Swim at AAU Nationals

Over a 6 day period from July 23-28, 12 Highlands Hurricanes Swam at AAU Nationals (Jr. Olympics).

Representing Highlands were Finneaus Garner, Aniah McKim, Jasmine Abranyi, Conner Hughes, Paolo McCrae, Dodo Zhang, Justin Powell, Alex Lopez, Aleks Petric-Sakonjic, Emilina Hernández, Lilliana Jandera-Chambless an Bella Batista.  Qualifying, but unable to swim due to injuries were Dasha Halldin and Emma Denisoff. Four of the 12 medaled.

Highlands Aniah McKim scored 8th in the 100 breaststroke.

Jandera-Chambless brought home a gold medal (100 freestyle), 2 silvers (100 backstroke, 100 breaststroke), 2 bronzes (50 back, 50 breast), and a 5th (50 free).

Abranyi (pictured at the top of the article) was 5th in the 100 freestyle. 

Garner finished 6th in the 50 freestyle. McKim scored 8th in the 100 breaststroke. Powell finished 9th (1st alternate for finals and medals) in the 200 freestyle.

This year the meet was held in Greensboro, NC. Next year Houston, Texas, last year Des Moines, Iowa.

The Highlands Hurricanes are a Highlands Recreation Park Team that practices mostly in the evenings at the Highlands Recreation Park Pool.

The only requirement to join is that a prospective swimmer must be able to swim 25 yards, the length of the pool, unassisted. For more information, please contact Steve Hott, Head Coach at 828.421.4121.
