Cashiers Designer Showhouse begins Aug. 23

Events include daily Showhouse tours, special events, and shopping

The Cashiers Historical Society—a nonprofit that honors and preserves the historical past of Cashiers, North Carolina—is gearing up to celebrate its 27th Cashiers Designer Showhouse. This signature fundraising event has become a cherished tradition for both locals and visitors from afar, many of whom have been attending the Showhouse for over 20 years.

“Every August, Cashiers welcomes several thousand visitors to the Cashiers Designer Showhouse, the largest fundraiser for the Cashiers Historical Society,” said Amelia Golcheski, Executive Director of the Cashiers Historical Society. “The Zachary-Tolbert House is the reason dedicated community members created the Historical Society, so it’s fitting our fundraiser is a Showhouse. I encourage folks to come to CHS’s campus, on 107S, to see the historic buildings their Showhouse ticket supports. The Cashiers Designer Showhouse is a major event and I want to thank all of the volunteers who’ve dedicated their time and talent to making this year’s the best one yet. Special thanks to Cheryl Stanzione, the 2024 Showhouse chair, for adeptly managing this event! It’s been a joy to work with Cheryl and we’re so excited for everyone to see the results of all of her hard work at the end of the month.”

Taking place from Aug. 23-31, the 2024 Showhouse is nestled in the heart of town and exemplifies the beauty of modern mountain living.

Introduction to Mountain Gardening: What am I supposed to do with my landscape?
Sunday, August 25, 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm

Join famed Landscape Architect Mary Palmer Dargan, Arielle McIntyre, and Dr. Nancy Pelaez Anderson to talk about cultivating the spirit of your landscape. They will discuss how anyone can use plants to make an outdoor space more beautiful, easier to care for, and better for wildlife, whether you have a shady or an open yard, a slope that needs erosion control, or a deck space or small balcony. This lively seminar will explore landscape designs that provide safe havens for the birds and wildlife that we love. Food and shelter are needed for our favorite regular birds, as well as pit stops for seasonal and migratory wildlife visitors. By working with nature to design a dynamic landscape for our bioregion, the speakers will demonstrate how they edit an existing landscape and consider working with nature to create a successful plateau or high-elevation landscape. Knowing what to keep, what to remediate, and what to get rid of, the speakers will address typical problems and offer some design solutions based on naturalistic planting to make your landscape fit the spirit of your home.
