Jackson County Emergency Management continues to urge all residents to refrain from traveling and stay at home in the wake of Hurricane Helene.

While the weather has stabilized, many roads across the county remain impassable due to flooding and debris.

There are still more than 9,000 residents without power, and even more without cell signal or internet.

There is no estimated time of restoration for any outages at this time. A boil water advisory has been issued by Tuckasegee Water & Sewer Authority for residents due to potential contamination in the water supply.

It is recommended that all tap water be boiled for at least one minute before consumption or use in cooking.

County and state officials are actively working to clear roadways and are conducting health and welfare checks.

If you would like to request a welfare check on a Jackson County resident please call 828-631-HELP(4357).

Please call 800-769-3766 or visit https://outagereport.duke-energy.com/ for outage updates from Duke Energy.

Please visit DriveNC.gov or click HERE for updated road closures and conditions throughout Western North Carolina. If you need assistance or have an emergency, please call 911 or 828-631-HELP(4357).

Stay tuned to the Jackson County Emergency Management social media pages for updated information. JCEM thanks you for your cooperation and support during this challenging time.

Update from the Cashiers Glenville Volunteer Fire Department

The Cashiers Area Chamber of Commerce recently posted an update from Cashiers Glenville Volunteer Fire Department Chief Randy Dillard.

The update reads:

Emergency Management requests that folks shelter in place and stay off the roads unless it is necessary to travel.

In the Cashiers Area on Sunday:

64 E in Sapphire is closed.

107 S to 85 is open. Haywood Electric is doing repair work so please drive with care and watch out for road crews.

107 N to Sylva is open, but may be closed from time to time for electrical work.

64 W to Highlands is open.

A COMMAND CENTRAL has been set up at the Cashiers-Glenville Fire Department and there is free water available. MRE’s may be available soon.

AT&T service has been restored and Verizon estimates restoration later today.

It is heartbreaking to report that many of our surrounding communities and neighbors did not fare well.

Asheville remains cut off from the outside world except by air, along with several other communities in Western North Carolina. Canton, Clyde, and Waynesville are flooded.

Part of I-40 slid into the river in the gorge at the TN and NC state line. According to TDOT, it will be closed for quite some time.

Chimney Rock village has been wiped out by extreme flash flooding.

Dams have broken in NC and TN and others are at their breaking point.

The Tuckasegee River breached its banks and flooded parts of Dillsboro.

We are here to help if possible, so please reach out if you need anything and take care.
