The American Legion has had a Post in Highlands since the second world war. The current Commander of Post 370 is former 8th and I Marine, Ed McCloskey.
After meeting with the City Officials in Highlands Commander, Ed announced the Veterans Day plans. Normally Veterans Day is celebrated on the eleventh month, on the eleventh day at the eleventh hour but with Veterans Day being on Sunday this year and a two day Food and Wine Festival scheduled in Highlands, the Commander announced that the Legion Ceremony will be at 11 a.m. on Nov. 12.
The ceremony will begin with the National Anthem, remarks by Commander McCloskey, remarks by Legion member Mayor Pat Taylor then move the announcement to the recent installation of 71 additional Veterans Bricks in the Hall of Fame Walkway. These bricks have been purchased to honor veterans in the Highlands, Cashiers and Flats area including Scaly.
They are installed each Memorial Day and Veterans Day and order forms can be obtained by Project Chairman Vice Commander Bill Reese at the ceremony. All veterans are invited to attend; parking is limited at the Veterans Plaza in front of the Highlands Police Department on Oak Street.
