Blue Ridge students from grades 2-12 raised over $450 for the School’s music department last week at The Interstellar Talent Show. Acts included singing, dancing, beat-boxing, playing instruments, and comedy. After the show the audience put money into buckets to vote for their winners, the act with the highest take is the winner.
“I was very proud of the performers,” said BREC Music Teacher Sarah Hall. “It takes a lot of bravery to put yourself out there like that. Most of them were nervous but carried on. Audience members have let me know how much they enjoyed the show and said it gets better every year.”
Award winners included Principals award – William and Cameron Hall; Mountain Youth Charities award- tie between Josh Velasquez and Jason Aguilera; Audience awards- 1st- Freddy Perez; 2nd- Arlethe Leyva; 3rd- Nathan Rogers.
BREC high school students selected the finalists from over 50 students who tried out. The money raised goes into the music account to help pay for expenses like sheet music, performance attire, instruments, piano tuning, and future travel, said Hall.
For the caliber of show the students delivered, they didn’t have too much time to practice.
“We didn’t really have rehearsal,” said Hall. “Performers got to practice with microphones on the stage during lunch over a few days.”
