Mission Health, Highlands-Cashiers Hospital announce leadership transitions

Mission Health recently announced that Jackie Medland, PhD, RN, plans to step down as chief executive officer and chief nursing officer of Highlands-Cashiers Hospital. Mission Health also announced that Timothy Layman, DNP, RN, will be appointed interim chief executive officer and chief nursing officer of the hospital, effective July 16 and continuing until a national search can be completed for the hospital’s top position.

“I want to take this opportunity to thank Jackie for her leadership and commitment to health and wellness on the plateau,” said Greg Lowe, President of HCA Healthcare’s North Carolina Division. “Jackie has led Highlands-Cashiers Hospital through a time of transition and growth and we look forward to working with Tim to continue our commitment to the care and improvement of human life in the Cashiers and Highlands community.”

Medland plans to return to Chicago, where her husband has continued to live while she has served Highlands-Cashiers Hospital.

“The work we have done together over the last few years has been nothing short of amazing,” said Medland. “I’m thankful for the commitment that our providers and care team have shown in taking healthcare to the next level here in our community.”

Layman, who will lead the 24-bed hospital until a permanent successor is named, currently serves as Angel Medical Center’s administrative manager of clinical operations and as a faculty member at Thomas Jefferson University and Yale University. He previously served as vice present for innovation and entrepreneurship at Thomas Jefferson University.

“We are grateful that Tim has accepted the opportunity to lead this wonderful and important community hospital as we take the time to identify a new leader who will help us continue to enhance the quality of healthcare along the plateau and beyond,” said Lowe.
