Highlands junior varsity volleyball team took the Little Smoky Mountain Conference championship after beating Blue Ridge Early College on Monday, followed by a win against Hiwassee Dam on Tuesday, both 2-0 at BREC.
“The girls played great tonight,” said Highlands Coach Margie Potts. “They never gave up even when they were down. They came together as a team and won! It’s been my privilege getting to work with these girls. I’m more proud of all of them than I could ever say.”
Potts added that the Lady Highlanders had a little trouble early on in the season, but they stuck with it and things got better.
“It’s been a great season,” she said. “It started out a little rocky, but every player has improved individually and the girls have really grown as a team. I’m glad they were able to come out and finish strong by winning the tournament.”
BREC Coach Cindy Fowler said the Lady Bobcats played well, but Highlands is a strong team.
“We are a really young and inexperienced team, but each player made huge improvements from the beginning to the end of the season,” she said.
Fowler added that this year was a learning experience and BREC has good things on the horizon moving forward.
“With the experience gained this year, we should be much stronger for the coming season,” she said.
