Blue Ridge Early College took it to a tie-breaking 5th set against Mount Airy on Saturday in the first round of the 2019 Volleyball State Championship tournament, but the Lady Bobcats ended up losing 3-2. BREC Coach Cindy Fowler said the girls gave it their all and never gave up.
“The girls did a great job, the only game out of 32 that went 5 sets,” said Fowler. “The first Bobcat team to ever win a set in the playoffs.”
She added that this was BREC’s best record in school history, and the first team to win 20 regular-season games. It’s also the first year the Lady Bobcats beat Rosman and Swain, and swept Rabun Gap.
“It was a privilege to be a part of the success that the Lady Bobcats earned this season,” said Fowler. “We will be returning all but one of the team members [Senior Katie Stewart] and we cannot wait to see what is to come for this team.”
Fowler said from day one the girls were focused and have improved significantly over the season.
“Leaps and bounds, the maturity level was a major reason for their success,” said Fowler. “They were able to come together and play as a team, something we struggled with in the past.”
