Big Brothers Big Sisters teams up with Mica’s Restaurant to provide meals for families

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Western North Carolina collaborated with Mica’s Restaurant and Pub in Cashiers last Tuesday and fed 33 people from 7 families.

The meals were packed and delivered by BBBS Cashiers and Highlands Program Coordinator Danielle Hernandez and BBBS Advisory Council Members Bambi Famous Kaine and Nancy Albers.

Hernandez said they wanted to provide a hot meal last week to help alleviate some of the many stresses that so many families are experiencing because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Hernandez suggested working with the community restaurants to help feed BBBS program families to the BBBS Advisory Council and Member Albers took the lead in making it happen. The result being McElroy specially making lasagna dinners for 7 of the 12 Cashiers program families.

“I noticed how important these efforts were in our community and then I began contacting our program families with BBBS,” said Hernandez. “Having an understanding of the disproportionate struggles many of our program families face from growing up in their shoes, I understand how important a different layer of support is during times of extreme hardship.  I brought this to the table for the Council to weigh in on and was supported by a majority.”

Kaine helped Albers and Hernandez pack meals on Tuesday and said collaborations like this help maximize community resources and supporting each other makes the world a better place to live.

“I have always felt strongly about giving back to my/the community in which you reside, so as a full-time resident and retired nurse, my heartstrings are tugging at me to help in any way that is safe and feasible,” said Kaine. “There are so many families, individuals, businesses, and nonprofits that need our support. I also am a Big with BBBSWNC and a volunteer for BGCP, so both of these nonprofits are dear to my heart. I also felt strongly about supporting our BBBSWNC Council, as Nancy and Danielle coordinated this endeavor and asked for our support.”

  1. I am very proud of BBBS and Mica’s…. I have always known Dale, one of the owners of Mica’s, to be a really good guy… his actions now only prove it. And thanks to the Plateau Daily News for keeping us informed. Being ‘stuck’ in Florida when we want to be up there with you guys is a ‘bummer’.
