Highlands Police make arrest in theft case

Last Wednesday, officers with the Highlands Police Department arrested a 29-year-old female from Franklin in connection with a theft of guest property from a hotel in Highlands. 

According to a statement from the HPD, on Sept. 29 officers received a report that a guest’s wallet had gone missing from their room.

An investigation led by HPD Detective Kevin Breedlove revealed that the wallet had been taken by the suspect who was employed as a housekeeper at the time.

Further investigation revealed that the victim’s credit cards had been used by the suspect at local businesses in Highlands and Sylva.  

On Sept. 30, the suspect was arrested and charged with Misdemeanor Larceny, and Possession of Stolen Goods. She was also charged with 2 counts of felony Identity Theft, and 2 counts of felony Obtaining Property by False Pretense.

When officers performed a search of the suspect’s, they found and recovered property that matched the description of the stolen property, as well as items that had been purchased using the victim’s credit cards.
