Highlands named a ‘best small town for shopping’ in USA Today 10Best Readers’ Choice awards

Highlands places fifth among 19 towns nominated across the country 

Highlands is a winner in the 2022 USA TODAY 10Best Readers’ Choice travel award contest for “Best Small Town for Shopping.”  After weeks of online voting, Highlands placed fifth among the 19 towns nominated nationwide.  

Highlands was nominated by a panel of editors and experts as part of the contest. Nominees for all categories are chosen by a panel that includes a combination of editors from USA TODAY; editors from 10Best.com; relevant expert contributors; and sources for both these media and other Gannett properties. 

The contest allowed voters to select the winner, allowing one online vote each day until it closed on June 6. The top ten winners in the “Best Small Town for Shopping” were announced June 17 and are as follows:  

  1. Frenchtown, N.J., 
  2. Rhinebeck, N.Y., 
  3. Montpelier, Vt., 
  4. Cape May, N.J., 
  5. Highlands, N.C.,  
  6. Dahlonega, Ga., 
  7. Carmel-by-the-Sea, Calif., 
  8. Sedona, Ariz., 
  9. New Hope, Pa., and 
  10. Camden, Maine. 

Other towns that were nominated but did not place in the 10Best include Aspen, Colo., Chagrin Falls, Ohio, Healdsburg, Calif., Lahaina, Hawaii, Mendocino, Calif., Paia, Hawaii, Saugerties, N.Y., St. Michaels, Md. and Sun Valley, Idaho. 

“The picturesque Main Street in the small North Carolina town of Highlands is a shopper’s paradise stocking a little of everything – sportswear, gift items, European and American antiques, home decor and accessories, fine art and kitchen gear,” reads the description on the 10Best HERE.

“Congratulations to our business community and town for being recognized in this national contest for the quality experience it gives to visitors and residents alike,” said Kay McHan, executive director of the Highlands Chamber of Commerce/Visit Highlands, NC.
