Highlands celebrated Independence Day weekend in the town’s traditional fashion.

There were a slew of games at the ball field, Highlands Fire & Rescue sprayed those willing to venture under the hose with a ladder truck, Rotary Club of Highlands grilled up free hot dogs at Founders Park, people gathered at Mill Creek to cheer on their number at the Duck Derby.

There was live music throughout the weekend that included three outdoor concerts, a trio strumming tunes throughout town on the back of a pickup truck, and bagpipers in front of the Highlands Presbyterian Church.

By sundown on July 4, people were setting up shop throughout town to view the fireworks display.
A popular spot is Founders Park or Sunset Rock, but the show can be seen pretty much be seen from anywhere in town.

July 4 cloud cover had some fireworks exploding half in and half out of the clouds.
The weekend was sponsored by the Highlands Chamber of Commerce & Visitor Center; with activities planned, organized, and executed by several organizations. As with previous years, the fireworks display was done by East Coast Pyrotechnics.
Throughout the July 4 weekend in Highlands, there were three live music concerts, bagpipers, and a trio of musicians playing through town on the back of a pickup truck.
Weather was a concern at times but never became an issue. Chamber Executive Director Kaye McHan said everything went off without a hitch.

“The turnout was amazing,” she said. “Town was full of friends and families celebrating the weekend. We can’t control the weather but I’m thankful it held out and everything flowed beautifully.”
Mountain Area Medical Airlift (MAMA) was not able to swing by the ball field this year as they were responding to a call.
