A closer look at the mudslide that closed US-64

U.S. 64 between Buck Creek Road and Brush Creek Road will remain closed until the end of the month pending weather while a contractor repairs 80 feet of embankment recently damaged during heavy storms.

Pictured below is an aerial video of the mud slide along US-64 in the Cullasaja Gorge taken on Jan. 10 after heavy rainfall.

NCDOT engineers met on Jan. 10 in the Cullasaja Gorge with officials from GeoStabilization Inc, which will design and construct repairs.

The steep shoulder area needs to be rebuilt in the Cullasaja Gorge along US-64.

The initial design involves installing micro-piles, building a wall atop the piles and finishing with shoulder construction.

 The cut where the slide occurred almost reaches the road’s center line.
