Annual Jackson Soil and Water Conservation District poster contest winners

The Jackson Soil and Water Conservation District held its annual poster contest for students in 3rd through 6th grade in Jackson County.

The purpose of the contests is to educate students about issues that affect our land and water sources as well as educating students about conservation.

This year’s theme was ‘Wetlands are Wonderful’. Students from Summit Charter School and Blue Ridge School participated in the contest.

Winning students each received a trophy and gift card: $50 for First Place, $25 for Second, Honorable Mention received a certificate.

The teacher of the winning students also received $50 in recognition of their contribution to the students’ success. The first place from each contest will advance to the Area 1 Contest in Waynesville which will be held on March 24, where they will compete against winners from the 15 other Soil and Water Conservation Districts of Area 1 who chose to compete.

3rd grade poster winners were 1st– Tula Tilton, 2nd– Leigh Helms, Honorable Mention- Asher Glenn. All 3rd grade winners were from Chrissy Hughes class at Summit Charter.

4th grade poster winners were 1st– McKinley Pusch, 2nd– Maryann Peterkin, Honorable Mention- Mila Dopazo, all from Chrissy Hughes class at Summit Charter.

5th grade poster winners were 1st– Rayn Kehoe, 2nd– Evelyn Hughes, all from Britt Iannacone’s Summit Charter School class.
