Martha Washington to visit Hudson Library

Kids Zone, Hudson Library’s after-school program, will be honored on Thursday Sept. 20 at 3:30 p.m. by a visit from America’s first First Lady, Martha Washington. As part of Constitution Week, the local chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution will present a stirring program including Martha Washington’s personal appearance. The afternoon program will also include a short film about the constitution, made especially for viewing by children, and other related activities.

The DAR has been the foremost advocate for the awareness, promotion and celebration of Constitution Week. By fostering knowledge of and appreciation for the Constitution and the inalienable rights it affords to all Americans, the DAR helps to keep alive the memory of the men and women who secured our nation’s independence, whose bravery and sacrifice made possible the liberties we enjoy today. The Battle of Sugartown Chapter of DAR, based in Franklin, is presenting programs at area schools as well as Hudson Library during Constitution Week.

Kids Zone on September 20 will also include the opportunity for kids to read one-on-one with their choice of trained reading therapy dogs. Paisley, an Old English Sheepdog, and Maggie, a diminutive Shitzu-Maltese mix, are looking forward to being read to by children starting at 3:30 p.m.

For more information or to request an accommodation, please call the library at 828-526-3031. Hudson Library, 554 Main Street in Highlands, is open 10 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 10 a.m.-4 p.m. on Saturday.
