Businesses along Main Street were ready for the hordes of costumed trick-or-treaters eager to make the rounds in downtown Highlands on Halloween.
“I think it’s really good that all of the merchants are participating,” said the owner of Highlands Kids, Irina Taylor. “Otherwise this would never happen without it. But it’s such a great event for kids and adults.”
Hundreds of people throughout the area descended upon downtown Highlands on WEdnesday to trick-or-treat along Main Street.
Traffic was blocked off on Main Street and lining the sidewalks were ghosts, zombies, vampires, clowns, and mermaids, and that was just one group of people. Angel Rice, 15, gripped her trick-or-treat sack in anticipation while eyeballing the bucket of candy sitting on the next table.
“This is great, I get lots of candy and I get to see my friends,” said Rice. “It’s what Halloween is all about.”
The Village People bust into YMCA outside of Wolfgang’s along Main Street.
Owen Munoz, 13, made his way through the gaggle of creative costumes in his own Bugs Bunny/basketball player costume.
“Sometimes you have to spend time away from home and school,” said Munoz. “Coming here and seeing all of your friends and dressing up is awesome.”
Anna Stiehler, 13, paired up with her friend Eliza Tate, 14 as, Winnie the Pooh characters.
“Well we just came from basketball and we wanted to wear onesies,” said Stiehler.
Tate said with her packed schedule, this is her only chance to trick-or-treat.
“You get to see all the different kinds of costumes and I really like the stores doing this because it’s something unique to Highlands,” said Tate.
Many families opted for the group themed costume like Ben Nelson and his family pictured above.
