It was fast and loose from the jump as Blue Ridge boys junior varsity basketball team came out with something to prove on Monday at home against Hiwassee Dam for the first round of the Little Smoky Mountain Conference tournament. The Bobcats walked away with their first win of the year with a final of 70-51.
The victory was bitter sweet because Head Coach Nick Pressler was suspended for two games after receiving technicals during Friday’s game against Highlands. Blue Ridge Athletic Director and Volunteer Coach, Tim Mayse, said Pressler was missed and the boys had to step it up in his absence.
“I’m very proud of the way they played without their coach,” said Mayse. “The boys wanted to run it and do a full-press, it was a totally different ballgame for them. They felt like it was the best way to beat Hiwassee (Dam).”
Acting Head Coach, Griffin Taylor, said it was the best game he had seen the team play all year.
“They rallied through diversity and everybody played hard,” said Taylor.
Blue Ridge will play in the LMSC Tournament on Thursday, Feb. 21 at Blue Ridge.
“The tournament is anybody’s game,” said Taylor. “If we come out and play our game like we did tonight, we should be in good shape.”
