BREC varsity volleyball team sweeps Haywood Christian Academy in season opener

Blue Ridge Early College girls varsity volleyball team slammed home the win against Haywood Christian Academy winning three straight sets on Thursday.

The Blue Ridge Early College girls varsity volleyball team from left are Mahalah Stewart, Chloe Fowler, Gracie Watson, Charlotte Sherrill, Katie Stewart, Maddy Potts, Holly Foss and Brenda Rodriguez.

“They played really well and executed what we have been working on in practice,” said Volunteer Coach Jason Watson.

The Lady Bobcats established comfortable leads in all three sets on their home turf winning by at least 10 points. Watson said having that kind of lead early on allowed them to switch up their defense to something that had only been practiced the day before.

BREC Maddy Potts tips it over what becomes a pretty solid wall by HCA on Thursday at home.

“It was a good opportunity to try it out and the girls actually ran it like champs,” he said.

BREC Holly Foss puts the ball down with authority against HCA.

The cushy leads were well earned with consistent kills and solid defense from BREC’s 8-player squad.

“Attitudes were great, but the hitting was phenomenal tonight,” said Watson. “The girls passed the ball well, which allowed our setters to feed our hitters. The sky is the limit for this team, if they continue to work as a team and have good attitudes it will be an exciting year with a lot of wins.”

BREC Charlotte Sherrill turns what would have been a free-ball into a kill against HCA on Thursday.

BREC was scheduled to play Asheville School tonight and plays at 6 p.m. away against Swain on Aug. 27.

BREC’s spirits were high going into the third set having won the first two.

BREC Katie Stewart starts the bump, set, spike routine earning another point against HCA at home.

BREC Gracie Watson racked up the kills against HCA on Thursday at home.

BREC Mahalah Stewart shuts down a kill shot by HCA.

BREC Chloe Fowler keeps the ball in play on Thursday against HCA at home.

Editor’s Note: This was taken 30 seconds before the match began. The pyramid looks simple but logistics escalated things quickly and time was not on our side.
