Blue Ridge Middle School girls basketball team travelled to Smokey Mountain Elementary on Wednesday for the first round of the Jackson County Middle School Basketball Tournament but lost to Scotts Creek 27-17 officially ending their season.
“They played hard, they played smart, they just came up short,” said Coach James O’Berry. “We could have taken better care of the ball and we had a lot of turnovers.”
O’Berry added that despite a losing season, the Lady Bobcats have improved since day one.
“We lost five starters from last year and we’re a young team,” he said. “I’m proud of how they did this season, they worked hard and gave it their all.”
BRS Aubree Rice snagged on average 15 rebounds a game and said they made some mistakes against Scotts Creek, but now they know what to work on.
“I think we could have done better passing the ball instead of throwing it every which way,” said Rice. “I expected we’d do a little better this season but it’s still good.”
BRS Vanessa Russell said Scotts Creek is always a tough opponent but they just take it one game at a time.
“We did much better this time against Scotts Creek on defense and catching up with them on the run,” said Russell. “And we have a lot of new people this season and they’re learning, but we’ll get better.”
