Highlands varsity girls basketball team took on Hiwassee Dam at home last week and took care of business winning 46-24.
“I was proud of how our depth kept us fresh and kept our up tempo going,” said Highlands Coach Brett Lamb. “This is an unselfish team and a great team win. Getting off to a 1-0 conference record and 2-0 overall a great way to start.”
Highlands Bella Wilson scored 11 points, Riley Conner scored 8, Hayley Borino scored 7, Ezra Branham 7, and Julia May Schmitt scored 6.
Lamb said Highlands played great on defense that turned into some easy transition baskets and were unselfish moving the ball on offense.
The Lady Highlanders had some trouble with shooting and rebounding, but made up for it on defense and stretched the lead out in the second half.
Lamb said Highlands also did a good job limiting Hiwassee powerhouse Katie Gibson in the paint.
“We knew that their inside post play is their strength, so we wanted to make the game faster paced and keep the ball out of 34’s (Gibson) hands,” said Lamb. “We were able to get them in foul trouble and get some easy baskets. We also changed defenses with their different personnel that helped as well.”
