Highlands girls varsity soccer team hit the road to take on Swain and won 4-1 on March 15.
“For the first game of the season, I believe they played excellent,” said Highlands Coach Caleb Brown. “They were definitely excited to kick off the season and get out there and compete. I think that desire to play was expressed by their performance on the field. They were hungry for the win and their play expressed that.”
Goals were scored by Highlands Reese Schmitt who scored 2, Julia Schmitt scored 1, and Addie Westendorf scored 1.
Highlands had one full week of practice before the season began and Brown said he’s proud of their performance on the field.
“They gave it their all,” said Brown. “They have been working hard in our practices and that hard work and conditioning has shown itself on the field in the game. I am very pleased with how excited they are to practice, develop skills, and do their best throughout the season. “
Brown added that they need to work on keeping their defense and midfield together in order to prevent them from getting split by our opponent’s attack.
“We can also work a little more on our attack when it comes to playing weighted through balls splitting the opponents defense as well as crashing the back post on our crosses,” said Brown. “All in all though, this is just stuff that we haven’t had as much time to practice yet.”
