Highlands Rec Park gets new bear-proof trash container

Emily Adkins and Judith Bobo of the Cullasaja Women’s Outreach Committee, pose with Cynthia Strain, Chair of the B.E.A.R. Task Force, and the new bear-proof trash/recycling container at Highlands Rec Park.

The can was purchased by B.E.A.R. at the request of Lester Norris, Director of Recreation, using grant money from CWO. The bear-proof container will assure fewer bears roaming the area of the skate park and tennis court, thus reducing possibly dangerous human-bear encounters.

The CWO grant also made it possible for B.E.A.R. to print thousands of informational brochures to share with people and businesses in the Highlands/Cashiers area.

B.E.A.R.’s mission is to promote the safe, harmonious coexistence between humans and bears. Anyone interested in joining B.E.A.R’s efforts is encouraged to contact Cynthia Strain at 828.526.9227.
