Highlands varsity volleyball team lost to Smoky Mountain at home on Thursday, but not before winning the first set against the larger school. The final was Smoky for the win 3-1.
“The first game was the best I had seen them play, then it was like they wanted to play safe and couldn’t get going again,” said Highlands Coach Katy Postell.
She added Smoky Mountain is athletic, smart, and difficult to beat.
“They block and they hit, and they don’t miss serves.” Said Postell. “Every play someone was on the floor. They are a good team.”
Highlands was neck and neck with Smoky Mountain on several occasions on Thursday and may have taken the ‘W’ if the Lady Highlanders took a little more risk.
“We still are seeing some great things, but we still have so much to work on,” said Postell. “I am proud of them for fighting back in game 4, but we have to figure out how to just play and not focus on being safe.”
The Lady Highlanders play rival Blue Ridge Early College at 6 p.m. on Sept. 9 at home.
